In the 1820's, a small church was built in Heuvelton. It was a Congregational Church until April 5, 1859, when the members voted to change to the Presbyterian denomination. On December 30, 1875, the Presbyterians of Heuvelton dedicated a new church edifice to the worship of Almighty God. The First Presbyterian Church of Heuvelton celebrated its centennial in 1975.
The history of our church really began in 1842 when a dynamic evangelist, the Rev. Lewis Alfred Wickes, came to preach in Heuvelton for a short time. He also preached in Massena, Gouverneur and Ogdensburg, and is no doubt responsible for the growth of churches in this area of the North Country.
Rev. Wickes was ably succeeded by Rev. B. B. Parsons (1844-1848); Rev. Ebenezer D. Taylor (1848-1852); Rev. Lucien W. Chaney (1852-1858); Rev. I. A. Devine (1859-1860); Rev. Robert W. Rev. Laurie Ford McKnight came in 2007, having received the degrees of Master of Divinity in 2006 and Master of Theology in 2007 from Princeton Theological Seminary. Since Pastor Laurie has been here, the Sunday school program has resumed, as has the choir, as has coffee hour after church! Our handbells have been played at holidays, and the church has given much to mission, especially to Rev. Paul and nurse Darlene Heller at the Mzuzu Crisis Nursery in Lilongwe, Malawi.
We at Heuvelton FPC are a welcoming congregation, involved in our community through the local food pantry and MINC (Ministries in the North Country). Our pastor is a member of the Heuvelton Ministerial Association, and we work with other local churches in ecumenical efforts -- worship and mission projects. Come and join us!
